SquadBlast – Seaporch map concept art and tileset

As a Principal Concept Artist for SquadBlast by Ultrahorse, I developed the concept art and full render for the Seaporch "King of the Hill" mechanic map. My initial objective was to research and create a 2D tile set that facilitates easy map rearrangement while minimizing its weight. Additionally, I aimed to infuse the map with storytelling elements, lore, distinctive landmarks, and unique assets. Each map needs to have a set of modular elements to create any other location with the setting, as well as unique objects that help sell the unique lore of the location. For gameplay purposes it is also critical to create landmark objects so that players can call out their locations with ease. The final tile set comprises 145 tiles and weighs only 25 MB including background.

"Muldvarp," the Danish word for mole, is the name given to a mining drone. "Søger," meaning search in Danish, is used for lifeboats. "Kaelkirijak," the Estonian word for giraffe, is the name of a port crane. I selected words from various European languages for heavy machinery not only for their appealing sound but also to emphasize how this oil rig, located somewhere in the Caribbean Sea, incorporates equipment from around the globe.

At SquadBlast, manufacturers have always played a significant role, with our team creating a diverse range of weapon manufacturers. By using this approach, I aimed to add depth and storytelling elements to the map, enriching its narrative and detail.
